The law states anyone finding an animal, has 24 hours to locate a licensed professional to take possession of the animal and the animal must be relinquished .
IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO POSSESS WILDLIFE WITHOUT A PERMIT FROM FWC. IT IS A FELONY TO POSSESS MIGRATORY BIRDS OR THEIR FEATHERS.
Can’t find anyone who will take it? Call your local animal emergency clinic, they usually have a list of permitted rehabbers available. Calling Fla. Fish and Wildlife will also give you access to a list of rehabbers in your area. All rehabbers MUST BE permitted through FWC and display the wildlife permit. Always ask to see a permit, rehabbers carry them with them.
Never attempt to feed or care for wildlife yourself. Wildlife has distinctly different nutritional needs than domestic animals. No, a bird does not take “milk”. Lactose intolerance makes this a deadly food for them. Eggs, bread and other baby foods are not correct and could kill wildlife. Rehabbers are trained to know and understand the nutritional needs so please do the right thing and get the animal to a knowledgable rehabber!
You can also contact us, here at Sky Harbor, we have a network of responsible, experienced, rehabbers IN YOUR AREA who can help you. We can also assist you with the correct temporary care of the animal until you can get it to a rehabber, in case you are lucky enough to end up with wildlife in the middle of the night, or are in an area where rehabbers are scarce or not available.
